The Dark Romance of F...

Fire Woman ~ The Cult

I'd been thinking about this lusty avowal of desire for a fiery femme for my "F" A to Z Challenge post but wasn't sure I'd use it until my Dear Friend Monica (and then my Dear Friend Nikki) chimed in to support it. For verily, as they said, 'tis a hot tune made hotter by the swaggering lead singer, Ian Astbury, who prances, "...like a cat on a hot tin shack..." (LAWDhammercy!). Woof!

Fever ~ Annabella

You may remember Annabella as the (alarmingly young) lead singer of Bow Wow Wow, purring about how she wanted candy (nudge nudge, wink wink). Well, Ms. Annabella covered this old tune to dramatic effect, one which impressed itself on my psyche and made me want to sing it like she did. Of course, many others have covered this song, but her version is my favorite (though the video's a bit meh).

Feelin' Love* ~ Paula Cole

(*Just a wee bit explicit)

I must have been in my mid-20s the first time I heard this tune, already married, and a mother. Nevertheless, its honest and quivering descriptions of a woman's arousal made me blush. Like, bright pink flaming cheeks, and whatnot. Heh heh. You get your freak on, Paula Cole. :-) (Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a proper video for the tune, so I have to show you an improper one.) (So to speak.)

Where the heck...

...did those two rectangular shapes on the upper right-hand corner of this page come from? In Firefox I just see their outlines, but in Internet Explorer they're two white rectangles that completely cover my A to Z Challenge badge. Y'all see 'em? What the Cornelius Fudge? HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM????? (Seriously, I've no idea how they got there, I can't "see" them in the layout or design, I've no idea how to be rid of them, and it's making me a little bit crazier than usual.)

Edit: So I've added a pic to push up the A to Z badge and make it somewhat more visible (I think). If anyone can help me lose the rectangles, I'd really appreciate your help. (Plus, once those are gone, you'll be able to see the nifty pic I added!)

Further edited to note: OK, the phantom rectangles are gone. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Edited yet a third time to bitch about their return. Gah! What the frig? Is Mercury retrograde or summat?????

Emotional Rescue ~ The Rolling Stones

Even at the tender age of about 10 I was able to get all caught up in the fantasy of the right man wanting me all to himself (you know, some day in the future, when I was a grown woman, for pity's sake!). And SQUEE! that funky bass line and that sexy, chant-like breakdown at the end - YES! YES, I want my very own knight coming to my rescue on his fine Arab charger! I...oh...ahem. Excuse me...

Eyes Like Yours ~ Shakira

This ode to the unique excellence of one's lover, with its lush Middle-Eastern feel and pounding dance beat, sets my pulse racing. It's a frenzied, high-energy love song full of passionate woof!, and I just adore it. You rock that Phrygian dominant mode, gurrrl. (The video below is the Spanish version, Ojos Asi. There's the English version, which I reference but for which, of course, I can't find a good video.) (PS: If I could shake it like Shakira, I would have no time for blogging, tell you what.)

Erase/Rewind ~ The Cardigans

Oh, all those players out there, with their little mind games. You know the type. They're interested, they're not interested, they drop little hints then behave as though they hadn't. They tease with their touches, pique you with promises...then they take it all back, with sheepish smiles and/or protestations of innocence. Yeah, right. This song could, I suppose, be about platonic head-screwing, but I think it's too sultry for that. (The interpretation of the song on Wikipedia, which I've linked to the title, above, varies greatly from mine. What do y'all think the song's about?)

The Dark Romance of D...

Don't Go ~ Yazoo

A classic scene - the person's no good for you but you'll die without her/him. So what's more betterer; a quick, if shockingly painful, extraction or the prolonged torture of a relationship that'll be the eventual death of you? Well, as long as there's hope, there's hell...

Destroy Everything You Touch ~ Ladytron

Right - so you stuck it out in the above scenario, got burned, and now you've a chance to love again, but what do you do? Do you reach out with grace or do you seek to destroy before you're decimated yet again? (I have to say, as dark as this tune is, it grooves along so nicely I always picture a group of folks at a wedding reception doing some kind of line dance to it.) (Maybe the Electric Slide.) (What? It could totally happen.)

Danger! High Voltage* ~ Electric Six

*Lyrics are ok, but video may not be safe for work.

OK, OK - enough doom and gloom! You decided you'd give Love another shot...But I betcha didn't know all that heat generated by the first flush of pheromones could be so perilous, didja??? Harmful hormones aside, this song is so absurdly, delightfully, deliciously camp, and it just dance-rocks so hard, it never fails to put a grin on my face. (No, never.)

The Dark Romance of C...

Call Me ~ Blondie

This is possibly the sexiest, most unabashed, insistent imperative ever delivered by a woman in rock 'n' roll history. She ain't sayin', "Oh, you know, you might gimme a ring, when you get a sec," she's sayin', "Your ass better frigging call me!" And what straight male (or gay female) in his/her right mind would disobey? Pas moi! (You know, if my gate swung that way. Or if hers did...actually, I dunno; does it?)

Can't Get You Out of My Head ~ Kylie Minogue

Ah, the obsessive-compulsive side of love. That overwhelming rush of chemical-cocktail in your system that keeps you from focusing on anything but your love object. Yeah, that's messy. But it's real. Just remember - it'll pass...all too soon. (Not that I'm bitter, or anything. Heavens, no!)

Closer* ~ Nine Inch Nails

*(Explicit Lyrics & Video - Extremely Unsafe for Work - and a little bit gross, just sayin')

If Debbie Harry laid it out with foxy ferocity, Trent Reznor did it with his dangerously insistent croon of just how he wanted to...well, you know. (Or you will know, once you've watched the video. Be sure your children/boss/co-workers aren't around when you do.) (I'm totally not kidding.)

The Dark Romance of B...

Boom Boom (Let's Go Back to My Room) ~ Paul Lekakis

Many, many, (many) moons ago, I had a thing for a dude* who told me, straight up, that all he wanted from me was a bit of fun, nothing too serious. It devastated me but I appreciated that he didn't mess me around, just laid out his intentions and anything that happened after that was based on a conscious, clear-eyed decision on my part. That's how I view this raucous, raunchy tune in all its fist-pumping glory - no pretensions of love or romance, just an invitation to a bit of the old boom-boom. God love ya, Paul Lekakis - and you ain't exactly hard on the eyes, neither.

*Edit: Just in case there's any confusion - the dude in question was not the singer of this song; I just meant to say that this song reminds me of that situation.

Because the Night ~ Patti Smith Group

A song so gut-wrenching, so soul-inflaming, and so true that U2 wishes they'd written it, I quiver when I hear it. Dayum, Patti Smith (and Bruce Springsteen, who co-wrote it). Da-yum. (And let's not forget the 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged version, where Natalie Merchant's voice gives that spine-tingling catch as she sings, "...take me now..." toward the end of the tune...yowsa).

Blade in the Back ~ U.N.K.L.E. (featuring Gavin Clark)

Y'all, I am guessing this song's about betrayal, and I have to guess at its meaning, as I can't really make out the lyrics, nor can I find them online (if one o' y'all got 'em, I'd be much obliged to learn what they are). I include it because that growling, grinding riff really revs my motor. Woof.

The Dark Romance of A...

All She Wants Is ~ Duran Duran

I didn't think the song was about sex (which is weird for me, as I see sex in everything, practically) (which can make Open House attendance at my Kid's high school a bit awkward), I just thought the sexy, synthy bassline fit in with my Blogging from A to Z Challenge 2012 theme of songs I find passionate/darkly romantic/simply romantic/just plain dark/sexy woof! My Dear Friend Nikki noted that, in fact, all the titular "She" actually wants is more nookie (for which I can't say I blame the gal). However, I feel I must point out in rebuttal that, in the video (click on song title to view), what the chick's got hanging from her bedroom wall are shoes, which just goes to show that Duran-squared (one of my fave bands in the whole wide world) have a deeper understanding of the feminine mind than I thought.

All Through the Night ~ Cyndi Lauper

I'm not one for sappy, sentimental ballads, but the sweet, loving longing in this tune disarms my natural defenses against schmaltz, every time I hear it. (And no, She Bop will not be putting in an appearance when we get to "S" - it'd just be too damned obvious.)

Ain't No Easy Way ~ Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC)

The opening lyrics of this song summarize my essential view of love - "It's easy to fall in love, when you fall in love, you know you're done." Amen, Brother. A-men. (Also; Peter Hayes = le woof!!!)  ::swoons::
